Jatindranath Duwara-Brief Life Sketch

Jatindranath Duwara (1892-1974) was an Assamese poet and the first author of prose-poem in Assamese. He was born in 1892 in Amolapatti, Shivsagar. In 1909, he passed the entrance examination from the Government High School, Shivsagar. He was admitted to Cotton College for higher studies, but later he moved to Calcutta to pursue a B.Sc. degree from Scottish Church College. Then he took to pursue M. A. and Law, but he returned home without completing his education. 

After returning home he started to teach at the Scottish Church Collegiate School. He also served as a part-time lecturer at Calcutta University. In 1945, Hanuman Box Surajmal Kanai College was established in Dibrugarh and Jatindranath Duwara was appointed as the Head Professor of the Assamese Department and he served there till his retirement.

Jatindranath Duwara took to writing from his student life. He was basically a poet. His poetry books are—Omar Tirtha, Apon Sur, Banaful, Milanar Sur and Maramar Sur. ‘Katha Kavita’ is his only book of poems in prose. This is the first book of poem in prose in the Assamese language. He received the ‘Sahitya Akademi Award’ for his book ‘Banaful’. He is the first Assamese to receive the Sahitya Akademi Award. He presided over the 24th session of the Assam Sahitya Sabha held in Guwahati in 1955.
