Hernan Cortes | Brief Biography
Hernan Cortes | Brief Biography
Hernan Cortes was a Spanish conquistador born in 1485 in Medellín, Spain. He is best known for leading the expedition that conquered the Aztec Empire in what is now Mexico.
Hernan Cortes was born into a noble family and received an education in law, but he was more interested in exploration and adventure. In 1504, he sailed to Hispaniola (present-day Dominican Republic and Haiti) where he became a farmer and a notary. He later served in the Spanish military and became a town council member in Cuba.
In 1519, Hernan Cortes led an expedition to the coast of Mexico with the intention of exploring the region and establishing a colony. He and his men made their way to the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlán (present-day Mexico City) where they were initially welcomed by the Aztec ruler, Moctezuma II. However, tensions between the Spanish and the Aztecs escalated and Cortés took Moctezuma hostage, eventually leading to a battle in which the Spanish defeated the Aztecs and took control of the city.
Hernan Cortes went on to conquer other parts of Mexico and establish Spanish rule. He faced resistance from other native peoples, but with the help of indigenous allies, he was able to overcome their opposition. Cortés was later appointed governor and captain-general of New Spain, which included Mexico and other territories in the region.
Cortés returned to Spain in 1528 to face accusations of misconduct and mistreatment of the indigenous people, but he was able to clear his name and was granted the title of Marquess of the Valley of Oaxaca. He returned to Mexico in 1530 and continued to govern the region until his death in 1547. 0 0 0.
