Jonathan Franzen | Brief Biography
Jonathan Franzen is an American novelist, essayist, and memoirist. He was born on August 17, 1959, in Western Springs, Illinois, and grew up in Webster Groves, Missouri. Franzen received a bachelor’s degree in German from Swarthmore College in 1981 and a master’s degree in comparative literature from Stanford University in 1985.
Franzen’s first novel, “The Twenty-Seventh City,” was published in 1988 and received mixed reviews. His second novel, “Strong Motion,” was published in 1992. However, it was his third novel, “The Corrections,” published in 2001, that brought him widespread recognition and acclaim. The book was a finalist for the National Book Award, a recipient of the James Tait Black Memorial Prize, and a Pulitzer Prize finalist.
In addition to his novels, Franzen is also known for his essays and nonfiction writing. He has written essays for The New Yorker, Harper’s Magazine, and The New York Times Book Review, among others. He is also the author of “How to Be Alone,” a collection of essays, and “The Discomfort Zone,” a memoir.
Franzen has received numerous awards and honors for his writing, including a Guggenheim Fellowship and a National Book Critics Circle Award. He was also selected as one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people in the world in 2011.
Jonathan Franzen is known for his highly literary and sometimes controversial writing style, as well as for his commentary on contemporary American society and culture.
