Iltutmish | Brief Biography

Iltutmish (also spelled Altamash) was a powerful ruler of the Delhi Sultanate in northern India from 1211 to 1236. He was the son-in-law of Qutb-ud-din Aibak, the first Sultan of Delhi, and was appointed as his successor after Aibak’s death.

Iltutmish was born in the province of Bukhara in modern-day Uzbekistan in the early 13th century. He was captured as a slave by Qutb-ud-din Aibak and brought to Delhi, where he rose through the ranks of the military and the court. He married Aibak’s daughter, which cemented his position in the ruling family.

After Aibak’s death in 1210, there was a power struggle for the throne among his successors. Iltutmish emerged victorious and was proclaimed Sultan of Delhi in 1211. He faced several challenges during his reign, including rebellions by his own sons and by other claimants to the throne. He also had to deal with external threats from the Mongol Empire and other neighboring states.

Despite these challenges, Iltutmish was able to consolidate and expand his power over much of northern India. He established a strong central government and a system of justice, and he promoted the development of arts and culture. He was also a patron of Sufi mystics and scholars, and he encouraged the spread of Islam throughout his kingdom.

Iltutmish died in 1236 and was succeeded by his daughter, Razia Sultan, who was the first and only female ruler of the Delhi Sultanate. His legacy as a strong and just ruler is still remembered in India today. 0 0 0.
