Hilary Mantel | Brief Biography

Hilary Mantel is a British novelist, short story writer, and critic born on July 6, 1952, in Glossop, Derbyshire, England. She is best known for her historical novels set in the Tudor period, including “Wolf Hall” (2009) and “Bring Up the Bodies” (2012), which have won numerous awards and critical acclaim.

Mantel studied law at the London School of Economics and Political Science but eventually turned to writing full-time after working in a number of different jobs. She published her first novel, “Every Day is Mother’s Day,” in 1985 and went on to publish several other novels, including “Eight Months on Ghazzah Street” (1988) and “A Place of Greater Safety” (1992).

In 2009, she published “Wolf Hall,” which won the Man Booker Prize for Fiction and was a critical and commercial success. The novel was followed by “Bring Up the Bodies” in 2012, which also won the Man Booker Prize and was praised for Mantel’s vivid and nuanced portrayal of the court of King Henry VIII and his advisor, Thomas Cromwell.
