Chandragupta Maurya | Brief Biography
Chandragupta Maurya was an ancient Indian emperor and the founder of the Mauryan Empire. He was born in 321 BCE in the Magadha region of present-day Bihar, India. His father was a nobleman and his mother was a servant. Chandragupta was raised by his mother and later became a disciple of Chanakya, an astute economist and political strategist.
Chandragupta’s rise to power began when Chanakya saw potential in him and groomed him to become a great king. With Chanakya’s guidance, Chandragupta formed an alliance with the King of Taxila, defeated the powerful Nanda Empire, and established the Mauryan Empire in 322 BCE.
Chandragupta was a great conqueror and expanded the Mauryan Empire to include almost all of present-day India, except for the southernmost regions. He also had to defend his empire from external threats, such as the Seleucid Empire in the northwest.
His reign was marked by many significant achievements. He established a highly centralized and efficient administrative system, built a vast network of roads and trade routes, and promoted agriculture and trade. He also established a legal code and a system of weights and measures that were used throughout the empire. Chandragupta was a patron of the arts and sciences and his court was home to many great scholars and intellectuals.
In his later years, he renounced his throne and became a Jain monk. He spent his remaining years meditating and living a simple life. Chandragupta died in 297 BCE, at the age of 84. 0 0 0.
