Sir John Macdonald (1815-1891) was a Scottish-born Canadian politician and lawyer who served as the first Prime Minister of Canada from 1867 to 1873 and again from 1878 to 1891. He was one of the key figures in the formation of the Dominion of Canada and played a central role in the country’s development during its early years.

Macdonald was born in Glasgow, Scotland on January 11, 1815. He immigrated to Canada with his family when he was five years old and grew up in the city of Kingston, Ontario. After studying law, he was called to the bar in 1836 and established a successful legal practice in Kingston.

In 1844, Macdonald was elected to the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada, where he served as a member of the government until 1856. During this time, he played a key role in the passage of the British North America Act, which established the Dominion of Canada.

In 1867, Sir John Macdonald became the first Prime Minister of Canada and led the country through its early years of development and expansion. He oversaw the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway, which connected the country from coast to coast and helped to establish Canada as a nation.

Throughout his political career, Sir John Macdonald was known for his strong leadership, his ability to bring together diverse groups of people, and his commitment to national unity. Despite facing numerous challenges and controversies, he remained in office for over two decades, serving as Prime Minister until his death in 1891.
