Shahidullah Kaiser | Brief Biography
Shahidullah Kaiser (1929-2011) was a Bangladeshi author, translator, and literary critic. He was born in the British Indian province of Bengal (present-day Bangladesh) in 1929. He received his education in Dhaka and later moved to Kolkata (then Calcutta) where he worked as a journalist for several years. In 1971, he returned to Dhaka after the independence of Bangladesh and became an active member of the country’s cultural and literary scene.
Kaiser is best known for his contributions to Bengali literature, particularly his short stories, which are considered to be among the finest in the language. He was a master of the modernist style of Bengali fiction, which he used to explore themes of human suffering, social inequality, and the complexities of human relationships. His stories are characterized by their use of minimalist language, psychological realism, and a strong sense of social commentary.
Shahidullah Kaiser‘s major works include the short story collections “Bichitra Kabya” (Diverse Poems), “Eka Ebong Koyekjon” (One and Some Others), and “Nibaron” (Voyage). He was also an accomplished translator, having translated works by Rabindranath Tagore, Nazrul Islam, and other Bengali poets into English.
Kaiser’s contributions to Bengali literature were recognized by several awards and honors, including the Bangla Academy Literary Award and the Ekushey Padak, Bangladesh’s highest civilian award. He passed away in Dhaka in 2011 at the age of 81. 0 0 0.
