Jean Chretien | Brief Biography
Jean Chretien was the 20th Prime Minister of Canada, serving from November 4, 1993, to December 12, 2003. He was born on January 11, 1934, in Shawinigan, Quebec. He was a member of the Liberal Party of Canada and represented the riding of Saint-Maurice in Quebec.
Chrétien was first elected to the House of Commons of Canada in 1963 and served in several cabinet positions under Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, including Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development, Minister of National Revenue, and Minister of Justice.
As Prime Minister, Jean Chretien is credited with leading Canada through a period of economic growth and stability, as well as successfully reducing the federal deficit. He also played a key role in the negotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the establishment of the Canadian Pension Plan.
