Mordecai Richler | Brief Biography
Mordecai Richler (January 27, 1931 – July 3, 2001) was a Canadian writer and filmmaker. He was born in Montreal, Quebec, to a Jewish family. He studied at Sir George Williams College (now Concordia University) and later moved to Europe, where he lived for several years before returning to Montreal.
Richler is best known for his novels and satirical writing, which often focused on Jewish life in Montreal and criticized Quebec nationalism. His most famous works include “The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz” (1959), “St. Urbain’s Horseman” (1971), “Jacob Two-Two and the Hooded Fang” (1975), and “Barney’s Version” (1997).
In addition to his writing, Mordecai Richler was a regular contributor to various magazines and newspapers, including The New Yorker and The Atlantic. He was also a frequent commentator on Canadian political and cultural issues and was known for his outspoken views on Quebec nationalism.
Throughout his career, Mordecai Richler received numerous accolades for his work, including the Governor General’s Literary Award for English-language fiction (twice), the Canadian Jewish Book Award, and the Giller Prize. He was also a member of the Order of Canada and was awarded the Queen’s Jubilee Medal in 1977.
Mordecai Richler died in 2001 at the age of 70 from kidney cancer. He remains one of Canada’s most celebrated writers and is widely regarded as one of the country’s most important cultural figures. 0 0 0.
