Cormac McCarthy | Brief Biography

Cormac McCarthy is an American novelist and playwright. He was born on July 20, 1933, in Providence, Rhode Island, and was raised in Knoxville, Tennessee. He graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1955 with a degree in Liberal Arts. After graduation, he moved to Chicago, where he worked as a parking lot attendant and a writer for the auto industry.

McCarthy’s first novel, “The Orchard Keeper,” was published in 1965 and received critical acclaim. He went on to write several more novels, including “Outer Dark” (1968), “Child of God” (1973), “Suttree” (1979), “Blood Meridian” (1985), “All the Pretty Horses” (1992), “The Crossing” (1994), “Cities of the Plain” (1998), and “The Road” (2006).

McCarthy’s writing style is characterized by its sparse, straightforward prose and its themes of violence, death, and morality. His works often explore the American South and the frontier, and they have been compared to the works of William Faulkner, Samuel Beckett, and Ernest Hemingway.

McCarthy is known for his reclusive nature and his reluctance to give interviews or participate in public events. He has lived in Santa Fe, New Mexico for many years, and he has been awarded several prizes for his writing, including the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize.
