Colson Whitehead (born November 6, 1969) is an American novelist, journalist, and MacArthur Fellowship recipient. He was born in New York City and raised in Manhattan. He attended Harvard University, where he earned a degree in English.

Whitehead began her writing career as a journalist, writing for such publications as The Village Voice and Harper’s Magazine. His first book, “The Intuitionist” was published in 1999 and was a novel about an elevator inspector and was well received. He followed it up in 2001 with the novel “John Henry Days”, which blends history, journalism and fiction to explore the legend of steel-driving man John Henry.

Whitehead’s breakthrough came in 2016 with the publication of “The Underground Railroad”. The novel was a critical and commercial success, and won the National Book Award for Fiction, the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, and the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction. The novel is a retelling of the story of the Underground Railroad, and it uses magical realism to explore the legacy of slavery in America.
