Arthur Meighen | Brief Biography

Arthur Meighen was a Canadian lawyer and politician who served as the ninth Prime Minister of Canada, from July 10, 1920, to December 29, 1921, and from June 29, 1926, to September 25, 1926.

Meighen was born on June 16, 1874, in Anderson, Ontario, Canada. He graduated from the University of Toronto with a law degree in 1897 and was called to the bar in 1898. He then practiced law in Toronto and was also involved in various business ventures.

Meighen entered politics in 1908, when he was elected to the Canadian House of Commons as a member of the Conservative Party. He quickly rose through the ranks and held various cabinet positions, including Minister of the Interior, Minister of Mines, and Minister of Militia and Defence.

In 1920, Meighen became the Prime Minister of Canada following the resignation of Sir Robert Borden. During his time in office, he faced numerous challenges, including the aftermath of World War I, the increasing demands for independence from the Canadian provinces, and a severe economic recession. Despite these challenges, Meighen was able to implement various reforms and initiatives aimed at improving the economy and ensuring stability.

However, Arthur Meighen’s government was defeated in the 1921 federal election, and he returned to the opposition benches. In 1926, he once again became Prime Minister following the collapse of the Liberal government led by William Lyon Mackenzie King. However, Meighen’s second term in office was short-lived, as his government was defeated in the House of Commons just a few months later.

After leaving politics, Arthur Meighen returned to the practice of law and continued to be involved in various business ventures. He died on August 5, 1960, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Arthur Meighen is remembered as one of Canada’s most notable Prime Ministers, who served his country during a challenging time in its history. 0 0 0.
