Sarojini Naidu | Corn Grinders | An Analytical Study
Sarojini Naidu’s Poem ‘Corn Grinders’-An Analytical Study
In this poem titled “Corn Grinders” by Sarojini Naidu, three different creatures—a mouse, a deer, and a bride—are depicted, each mourning the loss of their loved ones.
The poem begins with a little mouse crying while the stars in the sky seem merry. The mouse reveals that her lord, whom she loved dearly, has died. He went to the farmer’s granary shed to find a millet grain but got caught in a snare and was unknowingly killed. The mouse laments the loss of her beloved.
Next, a little deer is seen moaning alone in its forest bower. The deer shares a similar tale of sorrow, saying that its lord has also died. While drinking by the riverhead at dusk, the deer’s lover was struck by a hunter’s dart and died. The deer expresses its grief over this tragic event.
Lastly, a young bride is observed weeping while the rest of the world is asleep. She, too, mourns the death of her lord. The bride longs for someone to ease her tears and fill the void of her famished years. She mentions that her lover’s funeral pyre has ignited an unquenchable fire in her soul, emphasizing the intensity of her grief.
The poet uses simple and concise language in the poem ‘Corn Grinders’ to convey the emotions and experiences of the characters. The poem employs repetitive lines (“Alas! alas! my lord is dead”) to emphasize the anguish and despair. It also uses vivid imagery to create a sense of sympathy and empathy in the readers. The imagery of the stars laughing in the sky contrasts with the sorrow of the creatures, intensifying the feeling of their loss. The poem’s structure, with three separate stanzas for each creature’s story, adds to the overall impact of the poem. 0 0 0
