Alexander Mackenzie was the second Prime Minister of Canada, serving from November 7, 1873 to October 8, 1878. He was born on January 28, 1822, in Logierait, Scotland and immigrated to Canada in 1842. Mackenzie worked as a stonemason and later as a newspaper editor, before entering politics.
He became involved in the Reform movement and was elected to the Parliament of the Province of Canada in 1867. In 1871, Mackenzie was a founding member of the Liberal Party of Canada and was elected to the House of Commons in the federal election of 1872.
As Prime Minister, Alexander Mackenzie faced several challenges, including a weak economy, the Pacific Scandal, and tensions between French and English Canadians. He worked to improve the country’s infrastructure, promoting the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway, and advocating for the protection of Canadian industry through tariffs. He also introduced several reforms, such as the creation of the Royal Military College of Canada and the expansion of the public school system.
However, Mackenzie’s government was defeated in the 1878 election, and he was succeeded by Sir John A. Macdonald. After leaving office, Mackenzie remained active in the Liberal Party and was reelected to Parliament in 1880. He retired from politics in 1892 and died on April 17, 1892, in Toronto, Ontario.
Alexander Mackenzie is remembered as a determined and competent leader who worked to improve the lives of Canadians and promote the development of the country. His legacy includes his contributions to the expansion of Canada’s infrastructure and the promotion of Canadian industry. 0 0 0.
